Here's why Mariah Carey fans are thrilled about Taylor Swift's new single

Back in 1996, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" spent a remarkable 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, setting an all-time record. Now, Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," which has occupied at least a small part of your brain all summer, is close to shattering that record -- but Mariah fans think there's hope for their elusive chanteuse.

And that hope, weirdly enough, is Taylor Swift.

Swift plans to release her new single from Reputationthis Friday at midnight -- and there's a good chance it'll shoot right to #1. If it does, "Despacito" won't make it past its sixteenth week in the slot, and Mariah's record will technically remain unsurpassed.

Of course, a Tay #1 and a "Despacito" #1 aren't the only two options here. As Billboard points out, "Wild Thoughts," this summer's other ubiquitous anthem, has a shot at the top spot. (It's currently at #2.) So does Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow."

There's also the possibility that Taylor's new single is bad, thereby hurting its chances on the charts. But "Shake it Off" hit #1 back in 2014, so who really knows?
